Sarita Apel “Astria” is a professional dancer in modern/ contemporary dance and Argentine Tango based in Europe, after an extensive career in NYC and born in Wiesbaden, Germany.
She studied at various known ballet schools throughout Germany and at the early age of 15 she started her bachelor studies at Codarts, University for the Arts in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She graduated with a Bachelor of Dance in 2011, having worked with many influential European choreographers such as Itzik Galili, Ederson Xavier, Pedro Gomez and Loic Perela. Upon graduation she received several scholarships from the Prins Bernhard Stichting, the Genootschap Noorthey as well as the Ailey School itself to continue her studies as a scholarship student at the world renowned Ailey School in NYC. During her studies she was selected to dance in works of acclaimed NYC choreographers, Matthew Rushing, Loni Landon, Manuel Vignoulle, Norbert De La Cruz III, Marcus J. Willis, Sonia Dawkins, Samantha Speis, and in Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations” at Lincoln Center for the 2014 Ailey Spirit Gala. After completing her studies at the Ailey School, Astria was offered a contract to dance with Graham 2. With Graham 2 she performed at diverse acclaimed venues such as the Joyce Theater, BAM Fisher and the MetMuseum.
In NYC she has worked for the companies ARIM Dance, CR Dance Company, Dardo Galletto Dance, FJK Dance , Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company, Accent Dance NYC and Tango For All Company .
She also performed as a guest with Dansgroep Amsterdam (Itzik Galili) at the New Island Festival in 2009, with Norbert De La Cruz III, Omar Roman De Jesus and Buglisi Dance Theater.
Besides her work as a modern/ contemporary dancer, Astria is nationally and internationally performing Argentine Tango. In 2019 she won the US Argentine Tango Salon Championships . See Astria Apel Tango for more.
In 2023 she relocated back to Europe (Germany) and has recently been part of the Opera production “Maria De Buenos Aires” at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, where she performed Contemporary dance and Argentine Tango, choreographing the Tango part.
As a choreographer Astria has presented her work in prestigious venues such as the Ailey Citigroup Theater and the Martha Graham Studio Theater as well as in the short film production “CODA” and the Music Video “Loves Benediction”.
